RSS Feeds

What is RSS?

The basics

Really Simple Sindication (RSS) is an XML-based format for delivering news, classifieds and other timely content to your desktop. ZDNet.co.uk offers several RSS feeds, with headlines, descriptions and links back to the full story.

For more technical details on RSS, start with the RSS 2.0 specification. ZDNet.co.uk is currently using this format.

How to get started

Let's say you want to get ZDNet.co.uk's IT management news. When you click on the button next to "IT Management" under "News", you're taken to a FeedBurner page to get that channel.

You'll need an RSS reader that will grab the stories and display them. On the FeedBurner page, you'll see a list of popular web-based news readers, such as My Yahoo or Bloglines. Just click on one to set up the IT management news RSS feed. (You may have to subscribe to the service if you're not already a member.)

If you use a different web-based reader or standalone software, you should click on "View Feed XML". The stories will automatically display in your browser or application, or you'll get XML code to paste into your reader.
